Project Overview

CPV Shay Energy Center is an approximately 2,060 MW natural gas combined-cycle power generation facility with the capability to utilize carbon capture technology that is currently under development in Doddridge County, West Virginia.

CPV Shay is unprecedented in scale at over 2 GW, one of the largest known carbon capture projects in the world, and will plan to utilize amine-based carbon capture technology to capture up to 90% of the carbon emissions from the project. Once operational, the project will produce nearly 15,000 GWh annually, with only 10% of the GHG emissions of the lowest emitting facilities operating today.

Once complete the project will serve as one of the cornerstone projects for CPV’s decarbonization platform.

Community Benefits

  • New tax revenue that can be used towards community causes and benefits.
  • CPV Shay will create more than 2,000 jobs during the peak construction phase and an average of 1,200 jobs annually during the three-year construction timeline.
  • During plant operations, CPV Shay will employ 50 to 60 highly skilled workers.
  • Local businesses will benefit from increased commerce from the project and workers.
  • Due to its location within the PJM Interconnection and status as one of the only new combined cycles in the interconnection queue, CPV Shay is in a unique position to respond to the region’s growing need for more baseload power as the grid deals with looming retirements of coal plants and increasing energy demands.

Environmental Benefits

  • Up to 90% of carbon emissions can be removed with carbon capture technology when compared to a similar-sized facility without carbon capture.
  • When operational, CPV Shay will deliver enough electricity to power 1.8 million homes.
  • Adds to West Virginia’s energy diversity with a clean, highly efficient, and dispatchable resource.
