Competitive Power Ventures’ Fairview, Valley, Woodbridge and Towantic Plants Win Combined Cycle Journal Best Practices Awards
Four plants honored for improvements and best practices in safety, efficiency and more

Silver Spring, MD, November 4, 2021 — Competitive Power Ventures (CPV) announced today that four of its energy centers — CPV Fairview, CPV Valley, CPV Woodbridge and CPV Towantic — have won Combined Cycle Journal’s (CCJ) 2021 Best Practices Awards. Three of the four, CPV Valley, CPV Woodbridge and CPV Towantic, made top honors, or “Best of the Best,” and were lauded for their improvements and practices related to water management, safety, mechanical maintenance and more. CCJ announced CPV Fairview as one of their 2021 Best Practices GT-based Plants for their diagnostics which help identify system deficiencies and facilitate maintenance planning.

CCJ’s annual Best Practices Awards honor contributions made by plant and office personnel to improve the safety and performance of generating facilities powered by gas turbines. Of the 70 plants participating in the program in 2021, just eight plants, including CPV Valley, Woodbridge and Towantic, were selected for Best of the Best recognition. A panel of asset management experts assessed entrants on their contributions to improving performance, reliability/availability, safety and affordability, all in a challenging regulatory environment.

“We’re pleased to see our energy centers get this well-deserved recognition for innovations and improvements in safety and performance,” said Nick Rahn, CPV’s Senior Vice President of Asset Management. “Our best-in-class plants complement the market and grid’s transition to a lower carbon future by providing environmentally responsible, flexible and reliable power at a cost-effective price. These highly efficient designs became a reality thanks to the most advanced technology available, an incredible group of employees and stakeholders, and a continuing commitment to industry-leading best practices.”

CPV Fairview is a 1,050-megawatt, natural gas-fueled, combined-cycle electric generation facility currently operating in Jackson Township, Cambria County, Pennsylvania. It features GE 7HA.02 combustion turbines and a GE D602 steam turbine system, and was evaluated on the following innovations and best practices:

  • Electro Magnetic Interference (EMI) Diagnostics to locate electrical tracking and arcing

CPV Valley is a 680-megawatt, natural gas-fueled, combined-cycle electric generation facility currently operating in Wawayanda, New York. It features Siemens SGT6-5000F gas turbines and a Siemens SST-5000 steam turbine, and was evaluated on the following innovations and best practices:

  • A high-pressure fuel gas purging procedure
  • A reduction in plant makeup and discharge
  • Air-cooled condenser (ACC) challenges — safely managing and preventing gearbox failures
  • An equipment maintenance review process
  • A collaborative and comprehensive safety approach

CPV Towantic is a 805-megawatt, natural gas-fueled, combined-cycle electric generating facility operating in the Woodruff Hill Industrial Park in Oxford, Connecticut. It features GE 7HA.01 gas turbines and a DLN2.6+ AFS combustion system and is operated by NAES Corporation. It was evaluated on the following innovations and best practices:

  • Predictive and preventative ACC maintenance
  • Improvements in the DCS to strengthen its alerting & analytical capabilities
  • Increasing safety and shortening response times through technology and staged equipment

CPV Woodbridge is a 725-megawatt, natural gas-fueled, combined-cycle power generation facility located in Woodbridge Township, New Jersey. The plant features two GE fast-start 7F 5-Series gas turbines and a D-11A steam turbine with associated generators and is operated by Consolidated Asset Management Services. It was evaluated on the following innovations and best practices:

  • Using a small jib crane to improve safety and reduce maintenance time
  • Downsizing to a calibration kit to make calibrations easier
  • Making upgrades out of obsolescence
  • Putting in place an alternative use for plant wastewater streams

“CPV’s commitment to safe, reliable and environmentally responsible power is why it has four gas-fueled power plants on our 2021 Best Practices Awards list – more than any other company in the history of our awards.” said CCJ General Manager Scott Schwieger. “Year after year, CPV’s energy centers have consistently ranked at the top of our list for their contributions to improve the safety and performance of generating facilities powered by gas turbines.”
